Charging

What is the difference between AC and DC charging?

AC (or Alternating Current) is the type of current supplied to our homes and offices by the National Grid. It is most often supplied via a 3-pin/5-pin socket. Because this current is easily accessible, it is the most common type of current used for electric vehicle charging infrastructure at home. To charge using this current, your e-tron uses a Type 2 plug. This is the most common plug type.

DC (or Direct Current) enables faster charging because it has a higher voltage. This type of electricity is only accessible via specialized DC chargers, usually found on highways and some large retailers. All DC chargers will have specialized cables attached to their units. To charge using this current, your Audi e-tron uses a CCS Type 2 plug (Combined Charging System).
How do I set up the charger to charge the e-tron? Or What are the steps involved in getting a charger installed at home or office?

Step 1: Upon booking the Audi e-tron, the Audi authorized installation partner will visit your home/office to do a feasibility study on location. They inspect the parking spaces, the electric meter and outlet points to find the most optimum solution.

Step 2: The technical representative then confirms the possibility of installation or informs about the required changes to be done which may include a load enhancement. The Installation representative and the Customer confirm the place where the charging unit can be installed.
Below are the usual requirements (but not restricted to) for installing the 11 kW home charger in the desired location:
» Wall/Pillar next to the car
» 3 Phase power supply
» 11kW of "free" load

Also, you can raise a request for the home survey by filling this form.
When will the charger be set up?

The charging station setup happens after you book your e-tron and before it is delivered.

Steps involved:
1. Customer books the Audi e-tron through Dealership or Audi Shop.
2. Audi authorized Installation Partner does a Feasibility Study at the Customers’ desired location.
3. Upon successful feasibility, the Audi Dealership gives the charger to the Audi authorized Installation partner.
4. Our authorized Installation representative visits the customer's location to install and commission the charger.
5. The vehicle is then delivered to the customer.
6. Our representative then checks the e-tron getting parked in the parking spot and being plugged in.
7. Customer signs-off successful installation.
How do I charge my car?

1. Park your Audi e-tron near the charging spot, with the gear selector in “P” and with parking brake engaged.
2. Press the button to open the charging port.
3. Plug in the charging cable.
4. The light will glow white when the charging cable is connected and pulse green when charging starts.
5. To unplug the charging cable: Ensure the doors are unlocked; Press the button near the charging flap; Wait for 5 seconds; Unplug the charging cable within 30 seconds (in case it is not unplugged within 30 seconds, repeat Step 5).
How long does it take to charge?

- With 11kW AC charger: approximately 8.5 hours to 80% charge
- With 50 kW DC charger: approximately 2 hours to 80% charge
- With 150 kW DC charger: approximately 30 minutes to 80% charge
Do all electric vehicles use the same plug?

No. Most of the manufacturers in India are using CCS Type 2 charging sockets. If the same socket is available, it can be charged with a similar cable (note: charging time may vary).
How do I know that the car is getting charged?

Charging will begin once the green LED light indicator begins to blink. Once the green light is static, the car is fully charged or has reached its charging target. Please go through the owner’s manual for further information.
Is it safe to charge while it is raining?

Yes. The vehicle is designed to be safe for charging on rainy days. However, the plugs and sockets are not designed to be immersed in water. Make sure you do not allow excess water to get into the plugs or sockets. There has to be no water in the connector ends of either the charger or the vehicle.
Does outside temperature affect charging time?

The charging time will vary depending on the outside temperature due to chemical processes occurring within the battery. However, the vehicle battery is equipped with a coolant-based Thermal Management system for optimal battery life.
Why it is preferable to charge battery to 80% ? Or what could be done to increase the life of high-voltage battery?

Typically, electric vehicle drivers would charge their car to between 20% and 80%. Like a mobile phone, charging is quickest for the first 20% and once it reaches 80%, it slows down to protect the battery life. Drivers can also influence the lifespan of a battery by charging up to 80%. For example, AC charging is often better for batteries than DC rapid charging, hence, when using rapid chargers, charge the battery up to 80% instead of 100% which will also help protect its lifespan. We recommend you set your charging target to 80% for your vehicle.

The same could be set up on the MMI (in your vehicle's MMI select home screen > Car > Charging and efficiency > Charging.) For longer journeys, we recommend you to set your charging target to 100%, as it generates the longest range.
What are the charging capabilities of Audi e-tron 55?

The e-tron is capable of charging speeds of up to 11kW AC and up to 150kW DC.
What is an on-board charger?

An on-board charger enables an electric vehicle to charge on AC (Alternating Current). It is located inside the car and converts the AC power provided through the AC (Type 2 socket) charging point to DC (Direct Current) to charge the battery. The Audi e-tron has an 11 kW on-board charger, which means that its maximum charging capability with AC is 11kW.
Where are the charging points located on the car?

The driver side charging inlet supports both AC (Type2) and rapid DC (CCS2) charging. The passenger side charging inlet supports only AC (Type2) charging.
How long will it take me to charge my Audi e-tron at the High Power Charging (150kW) charger?

The Audi e-tron will charge up to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
